North End Records Presents A Band To Watch: Clam

image

Bio:

Clam took its current shape in 2013 when Eddie Kuspiel (bass) remembered that he plays bass. He joined Johnny Zachman (guitar/vocals), Joe McLean (keyboards/science), and Dave Lucas (drums), and the four set out to use their brand of noisy, experimental, dance-punk to celebrate life, love, and friends.

Clam supports their energetic, enthusiastic, bacchanalian performances with tight musicianship and an experimental approach to sounds, structures, and expectations. After recording the Secret Clam EP with the help of Wayne Silver at Ice Plant Studios, Clam has spent the last year writing, recording, and performing weird stuff you can dance to. The group is currently working on a new LP.

 Review:

Last week clam released two brand new tracks “Underground 2 (More Underground)” and “Chicka.” Both songs are extremely warm and welcoming but each have a distinctively unique feel. “Underground 2 (More Underground)” is indie glam rock at its finest with a fantastic tempo. It’s filled with brilliantly subtle guitar licks and one hell of a beat. It’s an utterly fun track reminding me of how great it is to discover something new. “Chicka” on the other hand starts off extremely calm and danceable but then smoothly transforms into something more chaotic. This creative electric guitar filled transformation fills my ears with wonder as I continue to press repeat.

Regardless both tracks kept my head bobbing throughout and without hesitation this Brooklyn based four-piece is definitely worth checking out. Listen to the “Underground 2 (More Underground!)” and “Chicka” HERE.

Clam’s Favorite Records:

 1.    1999 by Prince: It feels weird to go with this album, since it’s definitely not my most listened to record.  It’s not even my most listened to Prince record.  But, I’ll say Prince’s 1999 for these reasons: The album cover just pops out of my collection looking like a cross between Rugrats, Nerds candy, and…well…Prince,  It’s Prince’s first album with The Revolution and Little Red Corvette. - Dave

2.    The Velvet Undergound by The Velvet Underground: This record just sounds like going home and putting on a record. The strength of songwriting is phenomenal, and the production has a warm, rounded sound that fits well in most residences. Pairs nicely with wine. Often results in “the sillies” and/or pasta. -Johnny

3.    You Forgot It In People by Broken Social Scene: Just on the off chance there are maybe people who don’t know how perfect this record is, I gotta go with this one. It’s been resonating with me in a new way lately, maybe since I’ve really started listening to production more closely. The best-sounding drums I’ve ever heard recorded, period, and a damn virtuosic range of song styles and lyric approaches. It’s a really exciting record, vivid and lush but with quiet moments too. I love this one on vinyl; something about the crackle and warmth pulls it all together. -Joe

4.    Pinkerton by Weezer: If I was stuck on a deserted island by myself with nothing to do but masturbate and listen to a record, it would probably be Pinkerton. Angst ridden lyrics pouring out of Cuomo’s wimpy mouth gave me hope that even the skinniest of men could get laid if they shredded a guitar like he does in “Across the Sea”. Pat Wilson’s drumming on this record is my favorite thing ever, and I mean ever. -Eddie (=w=)

5.    I Can Hear The Heart Beating As One by Yo La Tengo: By my count, this is the one that I’ve listened to the most with other band members. It’s the best record I’ve ever heard. -Johnny
